What sets Up-North 411.com apart from so many other sites on the web, is the utilization and integration of social media. In particular Facebook. It’s a marriage, and one that we hope will last long into the future.
First, visitors to both locations have immediate access to the other. On the web site, a page was built that shows a live stream of Up-North 411’s Facebook Wall so visitors can experience for themselves, from that location, the bustling activity we engage in on the social media site.
High on a hill overlooking the AuSable River Valley sat an attractive log home, alone like an eagle in its aerie in its commanding, majestic view. The home loved looking out over the forested expanse which stretched 25 miles east to west and at least 8 miles toward the friendly neighboring mountain to the north. Each season entertained the home with a landscape ever changing: light blush of spring, shades of deep summer green, colorful autumn and snow-globe winter, sparkling like a Christmas tree.
The home often thrilled to lightning shows in summer storms, fabulous sunsets, soaring eagles, even planes close enough to wave hello to. But the home was lonely. It wanted to share the joy of God’s creation with others. So it convinced owners Dale and Sandy Handrich to build a beautiful counterpart close by, where many guests could share the splendid view.

I met some very responsible young men and women this evening. I spent more than 2 hours with a group of youngsters that are working on Search and Rescue training. They ranged in ages from 12 to 21. Some are going to college next year and others are enlisting in the military.
They youngsters were introduced to nature here in north east Michigan. They were set up with different tasks, learning navigational skills, medical treatment, building shelters, etc. They all had to work together to succeed. What I witnesse...d this evening was their "Dining In" ceremony.
This was a traditional dinner in which after having been in the woods for a week, they were afforded the opportunity to "let loose" and relax a bit as President Gettas said. The dinner was set up at Ma Deeter's in Luzerne and it was well presented.
Stay tuned for a more detailed write up on this adventure.
A number of Au Sable River Country members and guests enjoyed a motor coach tour of the four counties the river runs through on June 28. Main stops were the Sturgeon Point Lighthouse, Hartwick Pines, Michigan AuSable Valley Railroad and Lumberman's Monument. Everyone had a great time and got to see at least one place they'd never visited before. Thanks to Carrie Scott of the US Forest Service in Mio for being an impromptu tour guide, giving us interesting info along the route. The ARC group may consider another trip sometime which would be open to the public. Maybe we can even work in a visit to the Mio Milk Bottle Museum on that one!

The Oscoda County Cruisers are a group of classic car owners who typically meet twice each month from May through October for purposes of taking a ride to some predetermined destination, having lunch or a dessert and some good conversation. This is something that many folks would feel was all they could ever hope for and leave it at that, as you will soon read, that’s not the case with these folks.
Garland Lodge and Resort along with schools and universities across Michigan are working together to bring athletic camps to Oscoda County at the resort.
Recently Garland has undergone some major changes and is working to bring more to the community. They are now hosting athletic camps for athletes from the ages of nine on up.
